They are things that don’t let you sleep,” said Abdul Kalam, “You have to dream before your dreams can come true,” he had added. Those who have succeeded in life know the difference between dream and vision. Both are synonyms but entirely different technically. Dreams are goals imagined, while visions are dream realized, even before they actually happen to be. It is like visualizing something much before its happening. “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life- think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success,” said Swamiji Vivekananda. This is the secret of success. To see it before it actually happens. There are techniques to achieve it. Once we know it, it is only matter of time. Success has to follow us. Let us discuss about it some other day. Coming back to our present topic, we must set our goals effectively and must allow ourselves to expand horizontally while doing so.
There are three types of goals in general: Long Term (LT), Medium Term (MT), and Short Term (ST). LT is from 3-5 years, MT is for 1 to 3 years and ST is for 6months to 1 year. However, the goals may be personal or professional. Personal goals revolve around family and in one’s own personal interest. It is primarily meant for personal wellbeing and professional goals are meant for official target oriented purposes.
There are a few golden rules for goal setting; the first is to write it down in a piece of paper. It keeps one focused. We have to keep in mind that our goals can change – and that it’s OK if they do. Just make sure the goals you set are ones you consider important. Make it as specific as possible. The one question we must answer before we take Action. The question is: WHY do I want to achieve this goal? List every possible reason. After all one thing is certain that we can’t waste even one minute in writing down things which does not have any importance in our lives. How to trick yourself to finally get started working on your goals and stay on track until the goal is accomplished, that is the million dollar question. Every night write down a small task for the next day. Make it as tiny as you can. Something that would take 10-15 minutes. Practice it before going for bigger assignments. Remember, set big goals, but make your tasks small. “Take care of your minutes, and the hours will take care of themselves,” said Lord Chesterfield, British Statesman, author in fifteenth century which still holds good.
